I have an experiment to answer the question. Let's put a bunch of guns in a room by themselves and leave them there for a month. After a month you can record how many people died. The second month, we can add a bunch of American law-abiding citizens to the equation. After a month, we'll again see how many people have been killed. The third month, we'll remove the law-abiding citizens and replace them with criminals. At the end of the third month, we can see how many people have died. I think we all know the answers ahead of time, so it's time for a pop quiz: Which of the three things needs to be controlled: a. The guns, B. The Law-abiding citizens, C. The criminals? No cheating!!!!!

Ok, for the most part I agree with you. But with the desired result being less violent/gun-related crime, how do you keep the guns away from the criminals? You could, of course, restrict convicted criminals' access to guns on the open market. But many people, law abiding citizens, keep guns around to protect themselves, to go hunting, or for various other reasons. Doesn't this invite an increase in violent crime? A criminal is more likely to rob my house, for example, with a gun if he knows that I'm an avid hunter and have a shotgun above my front door. He's also more likely to just shoot me on the street instead of just beat me up (which is bad too, but the lesser of two evils), if he runs the risk that I'm armed under the provisions of the second amendment. I'm not really saying that I don't think that the 2nd amendment shouldn't be upheld. But, if we do keep it, we need some other way to keep guns out of the hands of criminals. Just for the sake of discussion.
