Article Details:   In an August 2008 newspaper interview, Palin said "alternative energy solutions are far from imminent and would require more than 10 years to develop." Ironically, developing the new domestic oil resources Palin advocates would take at least that long or longer, and would lead to more greenhouse-gas emissions and global warming from a finite fuel source instead of the clean, renewable energy that alternative solutions would provide.

Article Details:   John McCain's surprise pick of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate has a lot of environmentalists in the state worried about the influence she might have on the presidential candidate's environmental policy. McCain has worked hard to portray himself as a green Republican, but Palin has developed an anti-environmental reputation during her 20 months as governor, according to many in the state.

Article Details:   John McCain says, "I think that this — and perhaps providing additional incentives to permit exploration off their coasts — would be very helpful in the short term for resolving our energy crisis." Barack Obama says, "It would have long-term consequences for our coastlines, but no short-term benefits, since it would take at least 10 years to get any oil," adding that, "offshore drilling would not lower gas prices today."

Article Details:   Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger made a veiled swipe at Republican presidential hopeful John McCain on Thursday when he said at a climate conference here that anyone suggesting offshore oil drilling could bring down gas prices was "blowing smoke." The remark was also a dig at his host, Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, who riled environmentalists, tourism promoters and the state's political leaders on both sides of the aisle last week when he voiced support for McCain's proposal to lift bans on exploring fo

Article Details:   The speculative trading that has helped drive oil prices over $135 a barrel continues largely unchecked despite much talk and repeated attempts by Congress and regulators to rein it in this year. "At $135 per barrel, the U.S. will spend $1 trillion per year on oil, which is equal to 15 percent of the $6.8 trillion in take-home pay of everyone who pays taxes."

Article Details:   As President Bush calls for repealing a ban on drilling off most of the coast of the United States, a shortage of ships used for deep-water offshore drilling promises to impede any rapid turnaround in oil exploration and supply. This global shortage of drill-ships has created a critical bottleneck, frustrating energy company executives and constraining their ability to exploit known reserves or find new ones.

Article Details:   President Bush, reversing a longstanding position, will call on Congress to end a federal ban on offshore oil drilling. Mr. Bush now wants to work with states to determine where drilling should occur, but states would have a veto on oil exploration within 100 miles of their coastlines. Mr. Bush now wants to work with states to determine where drilling should occur. The Congressional moratorium was first enacted in 1982, and has been renewed every year since.

Article Details:   As gas prices skyrocket, attention has turned to public "pits," where brokers trade "oil futures" - the right to buy or sell crude oil at a specific price, on a future date. But far away from the hue and cry, hundreds of millions of barrels of oil futures contracts are traded electronically every day. More than 30 percent, experts say, exchanged in so-called "dark markets," the exact size and scope unknown to U.S. regulators.

Article Details:   Federal regulators disclosed that they are six months into a wide-ranging investigation to determine whether illegal manipulation of the oil market by Wall Street speculators, hedge funds and investment banks is driving up fuel prices. Concern has been growing that a speculative frenzy since the end of last year has helped to drive oil and food prices to unprecedented and unwarranted levels, creating hardships for consumers worldwide.

Article Details:   Sen. John McCain says he opposes the $307 billion farm bill because it would dole out wasteful subsidies, but his chief economic adviser Phil Gramm also wants to stop its proposed regulation of energy futures trading, a market that was famously abused when Enron manipulated California’s electricity prices in 2001. An aide, who spoke on condition of anonymity, acknowledged that the presumptive Republican presidential nominee also opposes the farm bill because Gramm advised McCain that he should r

Article Details:   After more than $70 billion dollars in direct subsidies, billions more in insurance subsidies, plus another $13 billion available through the energy policy act of 2005, Sen. McCain and others still feel that climate legislation must not merely create a price for carbon dioxide that would advantage all carbon-free sources of energy, but that we must also throw billions more dollars of pork at the industry. At some point, infatuation has turned to infatuation.

Article Details:   In an effort to jump-start a "nuclear renaissance," the Bush Administration has pushed one package of subsidies after another. But no new atomic power stations have been fully licensed or have broken ground. And two newly proposed projects have just been shelved. The fundamental fact is that nuclear power is too expensive and risky to attract the necessary commercial investors.

Article Details:   Commodity prices now reflect more the value of commodities as stores of value and hedges or media of exchange, i.e. their values as money substitutes or hedges, than they reflect demand for their industrial consumption. Demand for the oft-dreaded but ill-understood "hoarding" and "speculation", that is storing extra commodities (often off-the-books) and the purchase of extra commodity futures and other commodity derivatives to hedge transactions based on government currencies, will remain strong

GAO says: “Federal loan guarantee programs help borrowers get credit from private sector lenders—the federal government guarantees to pay lenders if the borrowers default on loans, which makes extending credit more attractive to lenders.”
